Weekly Scam Alerts

Government Agencies Imposing Scam Calls

Last week, a Great Bend Woman indicated government agencies imposing scam calls.

“It just felt it was really scary,” the Great Bend woman said. “It was a gentleman who identified himself as a Seargent for the Leavenworth Police Department.”

He told her she failed to show up to court this week to be a witness after being subpoenaed back in January. Morris said the call had a local area code and that he sounded convincing.

“We’re not going to call you over the phone and ask for any information like that. We’re not going to call you and ask for any money or demand payment of any bond or ticket,” said Dan Nicodemus, Deputy Police Chief Leavenworth Police Department.

“Southern Accent” Scam Calls

According to Jackson County Sheriff Gary Schuette, the call is from a person claiming to be from Sgt. Watson and Sgt. Huttenlocker, who tells callers that they have missed a court date or jury duty.

“No member of Law Enforcement will ever ask for payment over the phone, send gift cards, money, or checks to avoid arrest on any charges,” Schuette said. “Tell the scam caller that you are calling 911.”
